Research shows that getting regular physical activity at any age may also play a role in managing and reversing the risk of cancer. Physical activity reduces the size of fat cells and degree of inflammation. Several recent studies have shown the benefits of exercise in cancer patients and survivors.
In a one-year study of 170 overweight women ages 50 – 75, those who exercised for about 3 hours per week showed a significant reduction in circulation estrogen. Losing body fat through exercise decreased their estrogen levels, perhaps reducing risk of breast cancer.
An analysis of controlled physical activity trials with cancer survivors showed that physical activity improves cardio respiratory fitness during and after cancer treatment, reduces side effects during treatment and increased vigor after treatment.
Results of a study assessing the effect of exercise on quality of life in long-term breast cancer survivors showed that women who increased their levels of exercise after diagnosis of cancer scored better on a standard physical health summary scale than did those who maintained their low prediagnosis exercise level.
